NY GOP Mull House Speaker's Influence on 2024 Elections

NY GOP Mull House Speaker's Influence on 2024 Elections

We feel good about the structural composition of the political environment moving into 2024,’ says one Congressional District candidate.

When former New York Republican Congressman John Faso was competing for office in 2018, former Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who was Speaker of the House at the time, helped him campaign.

"He was a guest at a fundraiser that drew a bigger crowd than I would have otherwise," Mr. Faso told The Epoch Times. "It's not like you're doing public events with the House Speaker. You're mostly focused on fundraising. That's where the speaker can be most effective."

Although the new House Speaker, Mike Johnson (R-La.), may not have the influence or cash-on-hand that his predecessors, Mr. Ryan or Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) had, conservative New York Congressional candidates aren’t especially worried about it.

“We feel good about the structural composition of the political environment moving into 2024,” Kellen Curry, a 3rd Congressional District candidate, told The Epoch Times.

Mr. Johnson’s launch of a fundraising vehicle called ‘Grow the Majority’ containing 70 committees aimed at supporting House Republicans, is expected to help candidates like Mr. Curry.

“On the money front, a lot of people have stepped up to fill McCarthy's place, including Speaker Johnson creating the apparatus and the mechanism to raise money,” said Mr. Curry, a U.S. Air Force Reserve Officer.

Mr. Curry isn’t the only 3rd Congressional District candidate who believes in Speaker Johnson’s potential to influence.

Air Force veteran and attorney Greg Hach is also campaigning on Long Island to replace Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) in the 3rd Congressional District.

“Speaker Johnson has been a constructive force for House Republicans,” Mr. Hach told The Epoch Times. “I have no doubt that will translate into abundant financial support for critical races like ours next year.”

Denver chef gives out over 15,000 Thanksgiving meals across the metro area

Volunteers hand out free meals to families in need in the Aurora area.

Along with the giveaway at the Cherry Creek School District, Ms. Betty's Harvest Madsgiving was held at various location around Denver, Lakewood and Aurora, helping provide over 15,000 free meals to Denver metro families.

Denver-based chef Tajahi Cooke and his wife, Danielle Cooke, brought together local chefs, farmers and volunteers to provide free Thanksgiving meals across the Denver metro area on Thursday.

The fifth annual Ms. Betty’s Madsgiving Harvest provided pre-cooked meals stationed at various locations around Denver, Lakewood and Aurora.

The giveaway, named after Cooke's grandmother, has provided around 40,000 meals to families in need during the Thanksgiving holiday over the past four years. This year, they plan to increase that number by 15,000.

It's for families that are in need or homeless under the bridge. Whoever needs a meal, we want to make sure that's provided today," said Dwayne Johnson, a member of the Cherry Creek School District and volunteer for Ms. Betty's Madsgiving Harvest. He helped run the giveaway at Overland High School and Prairie Middle School in Aurora.

Though Ms. Betty's has been giving away meals for five years, this was the first year the giveaway partnered with Cherry Creek School District.

The genesis of the event came from Cooke's childhood in Jamaica. He fondly remembers when the Salvation Army gave out food, blankets and other provisions during disasters in the country.

Thanksgiving closures around metro Denver

Thanksgiving closures around metro Denver

Thanksgiving brings about a bevy of closures in the Denver metro area as government agencies celebrate the holiday and the day after, setting up for a long weekend.

Most government offices and city agencies in the state will be shutdown on Thursday in observation of Thanksgiving, a federal holiday. There will be no mail services that day, either. Most businesses will also be closed on Thursday, though some may be operating with a limited schedule. Officials urged the public to check out a business' specific website before traveling to it.

All 24-hour agencies — like emergency services and the Denver International Airport — will remain full operations on Thanksgiving and the next day.

Though Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, the next day is not. Most Colorado state government agencies will be taking off Friday, though. Denver city buildings aren't set to close during the day, but may operate on limited hours. Officials said people should check out a specific city building's website before traveling to it.

Mail services will continue operating on Friday, too.

Street parking throughout the city of Denver will be free on Thursday for the holiday. It will return to normal prices on Friday.

Aurora will close most city buildings and agencies on Thursday and Friday. There may be adjusted hours, as well.

All state parks, county parks, campgrounds and boat ramps will remain open through the holiday. Colorado Parks and Wildlife is offering free entry to all state parks on Friday for Fresh Air Friday.
